The People’s Liberation Movement of Iran (JAMA), which had been formed in the 1960s with a distinct ideology of theistic socialism and a strategy of violent struggle, underwent a significant discursive and strategic transformation in the years leading up to the 1979 revolution. This article, using an analytical approach based on social movement theory, explains this transformation not as a radical ideological shift, but as a strategic adaptation to the emergence of revolutionary hegemony under the leadership of Ayatollah Khomeini. The main argument is that JAMA, in a political calculation based on the analysis of the political opportunity structure and relying on its solid theoretical foundation, concluded that achieving its fundamental goals—namely, the complete overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of a justice-oriented order—was possible only through aligning with the mainstream of the revolution and accepting the leadership of Ayatollah Khomeini. By analyzing key texts from Jama, this article shows how the movement redefined its core concepts and integrated them into the discourse of the Islamic Revolution and Islamic rule to consolidate its position within the coalition of revolutionary forces. This process is an example of the flexibility of an ideological group to maintain its survival and influence at a critical historical moment.
