Abstract
Abstract: One of the most significant speeches delivered by Imam Khomeini during the events leading up to the Islamic Revolution is his historic address on 3 June 1963. The central question of this study is: based on John Searle’s speech act theory, what types of speech acts did Imam Khomeini employ in his 3 June 1963 speech, and what conclusions can be drawn from analyzing their frequency? This research was conducted using a descriptive‑analytical approach and a mixed (quantitative–qualitative) method. The data were collected through library and documentary research. The highest frequency belonged to assertive acts (61.11%), while no declarative acts were identified in the text. Imam Khomeini’s directive speech acts (20.37%) were predominantly direct speech acts expressed through positive and negative imperative sentences, ranging from strong to mild forms. The assertive and expressive acts (16.66%) were accompanied by various rhetorical and literary devices—such as repetition, brevity, and the use of third‑person pronouns—to enhance their persuasive impact. The findings indicate that, given the predominance of assertive acts in Imam Khomeini’s speech, he sought, first, to explain the country’s situation and the hidden motives behind the Shah’s decisions in light of major events since 1961, particularly the White Revolution referendum of 26 January 1963; second, to clarify the Shah’s relations with Israel and the United States; and third, while calling on the people to remain vigilant and to protest, to warn the Shah about the consequences of his decisions.
