Protests Against Vulgar Cinema in Isfahan before the Islamic Revolution

Abstract

The development of Iranian cinema began in Reza Shah era, but this cinema which had its origin in the West carried with itself cultural elements of its birthplace such as nudity, burglary, crime and murder. This kind of cinema, from the beginning had been objected by learned and caring Iranian individuals and figures. Attempts have been made in this paper to discuss the reaction of committed and faithful Isfahan society to vulgar cinema and how they demonstrated the contradiction of this cinema with Iranian-Islamic culture. The data was collected from the media of the related era. The people’s objections have been studied in the press and the traditional society. The hypothesis of this paper is that the protests and criticisms against this kind of cinema had no answer in Pahlavi’s regime because the system had no essential problem with this procedure. If some scenes were censored, it was not very effective. This perspective may give some clues to some “cinema-burning” events before the revolution
